Overview:

This reference guide provides customers with the NoW 365 DRaaS optimized alarms. Usage scenario and recommended settings are provided as well.

Notes:

  • This reference guide does not cover all the alarms available on the platform.

  • Customers do have the option to explore, manage and customize their own alarms and settings.

  • The web portal includes an extensive list of pre-defined alarm templates to cover various scenarios.

  • We understand that this might feel a bit overwhelming, so to simplify things, we’ve created the following recommended starter alarms for your reference.

1.0 Alarms for detecting missed backups (Servers)

This alarm checks whether a backup recovery point has been created within the defined Recovery Point Objective (RPO) period/interval.

Computer without backup

  • Customers that operate 7 days a week, or with servers requiring daily offsite backups

  • Examples:

    • Server that contains Point of Sale Data

    • Accounting Systems

    • File Servers

    • Or where missing 1 day of backup job run is not acceptable.

  • When a backup recovery point fails to be created within 1 day, plus an additional 16-hour buffer, the alert status will be marked as 'Error.'

  • There will be no warning

Rules

  • Rule1:

    • Exclusion mask (names): Blank

    • RPO: 1 days

    • Tolerance: 8 hours

    • Severity: Warning

    • Agent Operation Mode: Servers

  • When a backup recovery point fails to be created within 2 days, plus an additional 16-hour buffer, the alert status will be marked as 'Error.'

    • Mobile remote users with laptops that don’t require backing up all the time.

    • Or where missing more than 5 days of backup recovery points is not acceptable.

  • When a backup recovery point fails to be created within 4 days, plus an additional 16-hour buffer, the alert status will be marked as 'warning.'

    • When a backup recovery point fails to be created within 5 days, plus an additional 16-hour buffer, the alert status will be marked as 'Error.'

Computer without backup

  • Mobile remote users with laptops that do not require frequent backups.

  • Workstations and laptops that back up once or twice a week.

  • Backup gaps of 7 to 8 days are acceptable.

  • When a backup recovery point fails to be created within 7 days, plus an additional 16-hour buffer, the alert status will be marked as ‘Warning.’

  • If the backup recovery point fails to be created within 8 days, plus an additional 16-hour buffer, the alert status will be marked as 'Error.'

3.0 Alarms for detecting Backup Agent Job State/status

This alarm checks whether computers completed the backup job run with a failed, warning, or success status.

  • Failed status = Is an incomplete backup or job failure, and the recovery point is not usable.

  • Warning status = Is an incomplete backup, and the recovery point is not usable.

  • Success status = You only get this status when the state changes from Failed /Warning to success

Backup agent job state

  • Applies to

  • All purpose. User wants to be informed about their last known backup state

  • When a backup job runs into issues but completes the backup. This produces a ‘warning’ state.

  • When a backup job runs into issues and produces a ‘failed’ state. This is usually an incomplete backup, and the recovery point is not usable.

  • When a backup job state changes from ‘warning’ (last known state) back to ‘success’.

  • When a backup job state changes from ‘warning’ (last known state) back to 'success'.

Backup agent job state

  • When users don’t want to receive warning notifications due to the following reasons:

    • The warning is consistent and caused by the same underlying issue known to the environment/setup.

    • When the user is only concerned about failed backup states.

    • Or other reasons.

  • When a backup job runs into issues, and unable to complete the backup. This produces a ‘failed’ state. The recovery point is not usable.

  • When a backup job state changes from ‘warning’ (last known state) back to ‘success.'

4.0 Alarms for detecting to low cloud storage space

This alarm checks whether remaining cloud storage exceeded the allowable threshold

  • Failed status = It surpassed the allowable threshold. Backups could potentially start to fail due to lack of space

  • Warning status = The remaining cloud storage is getting low, backup jobs should be able to finish.

Company Cloud storage quota

  • All-purpose workstation and server backing up to NoW 365 DRaaS cloud storage.

  • Staying informed about cloud storage usage to ensure sufficient space remains for backup operations.

  • When the cloud repository has less than 10% remaining storage. The alert status will be “Warning”.

  • When the cloud repository has less than 5% remaining storage. The alert status will be “Failure”

  • Please be advised that there will be no repeat alerts. Each threshold/Rule will only get triggered once.
